Frequently Asked Questions
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck like this?
Yes. When a roadway is blocked, or traffic backs up quickly, trailing vehicles that don't slow in time can strike the stopped cars ahead, adding to the number of vehicles involved.
What makes a crash involving five or six vehicles hard to investigate?
Investigators have to work out the order in which vehicles struck each other, which can take time when there are multiple points of impact and several drivers and witnesses to interview.
What typically causes multi-vehicle pile-ups?
Common factors include sudden braking, following too closely, limited visibility, and road or weather conditions that reduce a driver's ability to stop in time. No cause has been confirmed in this crash.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Barrington Hills, IL
If you're involved in a crash with several other vehicles, stay inside your car if it's not safe to get out, and turn on hazard lights if you're able. Call 911 even if injuries aren't obvious right away, since some symptoms take hours to appear. Once you're safe, get checked by a medical provider, and keep any paperwork from police or responding agencies for your records. If you witnessed the crash, stay nearby if it's safe to do so, since investigators often rely on accounts from multiple drivers to sort out how a chain-reaction crash unfolded.
