Why Speed Plays a Bigger Role in Highway Crashes Than Drivers Expect
Crashes on highways like Hwy 10 usually come down to the gap between how fast traffic is moving and how little time drivers have to react when something changes ahead, whether that's a car slowing to turn, merging, or stopped in a lane. At higher speeds, the distance a vehicle covers before a driver can brake grows fast, and that extra distance is sometimes the difference between stopping in time and a collision.
Speed also changes what happens on impact. A crash at 55 mph transfers far more energy into both vehicles than the same crash at 30 mph, which is why highway collisions tend to produce more serious injuries than crashes on slower city streets even when the vehicles themselves look similar in size and condition.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, passenger vehicles made up 92 percent of registered vehicles and 89 percent of vehicle miles traveled in 2023. With that much everyday highway travel happening in ordinary passenger cars and minivans, the margin between a routine trip and a serious crash sometimes comes down to seconds and speed differences that drivers don't fully register until it's too late.
