Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes most frequently happen?
A large share occur on highways and interstates, where higher speeds and multi-vehicle traffic raise the chance that a crash turns deadly.
What makes a crash more likely to be fatal?
Factors such as high speed, nighttime conditions, multiple vehicles involved, and a disabled vehicle left in a travel lane can all raise the risk of a fatal outcome.
How does speed affect whether people survive a crash?
Higher speeds increase the force of impact, which raises the severity of injuries and lowers the odds of survival, especially in secondary collisions.
Why does seat belt use matter so much?
Seat belts keep occupants in place during a collision or rollover, reducing the chance they are thrown from their seat or ejected from the vehicle.
