BELPRE, Washington County, Ohio, Oct. 1, 2026 — Three people suffered minor injuries on Tuesday afternoon, September 29, when a three-vehicle crash closed a lane of SR-339 near Schoolhouse Road. All three were taken to a hospital for treatment, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at about 3:19 p.m. It involved a Kia SUV, a Chevrolet pickup and a tractor.
The Chevy was reportedly headed northbound on SR-339 and turning left onto Schoolhouse Road when it collided with the Kia, which was traveling southbound, the patrol said. Both vehicles then struck a tractor that was stopped on Schoolhouse Road.
One lane of SR-339 was shut down following the crash while crews worked the scene. The extent of the injuries has not been detailed, and the crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.
What Actually Cuts Down on Multi-Vehicle Turning Crashes
Crashes like this one, where a left turn puts one vehicle in the path of oncoming traffic, are usually addressed through road design rather than driver behavior alone. Dedicated left-turn lanes, protected turn signals, and better sight lines at rural intersections all reduce the number of times a turning vehicle and an oncoming vehicle occupy the same space at the same moment. Roundabouts, where they fit the traffic volume, remove the left-turn conflict almost entirely.
Once a collision happens, what keeps people alive and uninjured usually comes down to seat belts and the vehicle's built-in protections. Airbags, crumple zones, and belt pretensioners are designed to absorb and redirect crash energy away from occupants, and a properly worn seat belt keeps a person positioned where those systems can do their job. Riding unbelted, or out of position, changes how much protection any of that technology can actually provide.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023. That figure is a reminder that outcomes in multi-vehicle crashes depend heavily on what kind of vehicle a person is in and whether they are restrained, not just on how the collision itself unfolds.
Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes involving a turning vehicle? Misjudged gaps in oncoming traffic, limited visibility, and failure to yield the right of way are common factors reported in these collisions.
Does speed make a difference in a crash like this? Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force involved in any impact, which raises the chance of serious injury.
Why is distracted driving a particular risk at intersections and turns? Turning maneuvers require a driver to judge the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles in a short window; a few seconds of distraction can remove that margin entirely.
Do road and weather conditions play a role in these crashes? Wet pavement, glare, and reduced visibility can all affect stopping distance and a driver's ability to judge when it's safe to turn or merge.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Belpre, Ohio
If you're involved in a crash, stay at the scene and check yourself and others for injuries before doing anything else. Call 911 so responders and law enforcement can document the scene, even if injuries seem minor at first, since some symptoms take hours to appear.
Seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible, even if you feel fine, and keep any paperwork from the scene and the hospital. Reporting the crash promptly to your insurance company and following up with your own notes on what you remember can help make sure the details are accurate while they're still fresh.
