Where Tanker Truck Crashes at Intersections Tend to Happen
Large trucks carrying tankers often struggle most not on open highways but at ordinary intersections like the one in this case, places where a vehicle that takes a long distance to stop meets cross traffic, turning cars, and changing signals. An unsignalled or lightly controlled intersection gives a loaded tanker little room to adjust once another vehicle enters its path.
Urban arterials with frequent side streets, like those running through residential sections of a city, add turning movements and parked cars that narrow sightlines. A tanker's height and length can hide a sedan that is stopped or turning until the gap to react has closed.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,472 people were killed in traffic crashes involving large trucks in 2023. Many of those crashes happen at the kinds of intersections and crossing points found in ordinary neighborhoods, not just on interstates.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do after a crash involving a commercial truck?
Call 911, stay where it's safe, and wait for police and EMS to document the scene. Get medical care even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to appear.
Why do trucks need so much room to stop?
A loaded tanker or tractor-trailer weighs far more than a passenger car and needs a much longer distance to slow down or stop, especially on wet or crowded roads.
What makes truck crashes more dangerous than typical car accidents?
The size and weight difference means occupants of a smaller vehicle absorb most of the force in a collision, often leading to more serious injuries than crashes between two passenger cars.
What are a truck's blind spots, and why do they matter?
Large trucks have wide blind spots along both sides, behind the trailer, and directly in front of the cab. Drivers in those zones may not be visible to the truck driver, which matters most at intersections and lane changes.
