Newstead, NY (August 11, 2026) – A bicyclist was flown to a hospital on Sunday after being struck by a vehicle on Buell Street in Newstead. Emergency crews arrived at the scene shortly before noon.
First responders found the injured cyclist in the roadway, receiving aid from bystanders and an off-duty firefighter, according to initial reports.
Buell Road was closed between Main Road and Skyline Drive while crews worked. Given the severity of the injuries, a medical helicopter was requested, and the cyclist was flown to Erie County Medical Center for further treatment.
State troopers conducted an on-scene investigation into the wreck. We hope for a full recovery for the cyclist.
Why Are Bicyclists So Vulnerable on Rural Roads?
Bicyclists face significant risk when struck by a vehicle, since they have essentially no protective structure around them compared with someone inside a car. Even a lower-speed impact can cause serious injury, particularly to the head, chest, or limbs, depending on how the cyclist is thrown or lands after being hit.

Helicopter transport is typically reserved for the most serious cases, since it can significantly shorten the time it takes to reach a trauma center compared with ground transport. Bystanders who can provide basic first aid, such as applying pressure to a wound or keeping an injured person calm and still, can make a meaningful difference in the minutes before emergency crews arrive.
