What Are Important Bicycle Safety Tips for Cyclists?
Bicyclists have less physical protection than people inside motor vehicles, making crashes with vehicles especially dangerous. Wearing a properly fitted helmet can help reduce the risk of serious head injuries during a collision. Cyclists should also use appropriate lights and reflective equipment when visibility is limited.
Riding predictably can help drivers recognize a cyclist’s movements. When traveling on a roadway, bicyclists should follow traffic signals and signs and remain aware of vehicles approaching from behind or from side streets. Avoiding distractions also allows cyclists to react more quickly to changing traffic conditions.
Drivers can help protect bicyclists by slowing down and giving them adequate space when passing. Motorists should check mirrors and blind spots before turning, changing lanes, or opening a vehicle door near a bicycle lane. Extra attention is especially important at intersections, where vehicles and bicycles may cross paths unexpectedly.
