Why Bicycle Accidents Can Lead to Serious Injuries
Bicycle accidents can cause serious harm because riders have limited protection when they are hit by a vehicle or fall to the pavement. A helmet can reduce some head injury risk, but it cannot protect the whole body. Riders may hurt their arms, legs, shoulders, back, or hips during the fall.
Road design can also affect bicycle safety. Driveways, storefronts, narrow shoulders, traffic speed, and turning vehicles may all create added risk. Medical teams may check for fractures, head trauma, road rash, and internal injuries after a bicycle-related emergency. Some symptoms may appear later, especially after the first rush of adrenaline fades. Vehicle position, roadway markings, visibility, and witness statements can help explain how the contact happened.
