Why Intersections Can Be Risk Areas for Bicyclists
Intersections are among the most common locations for bicycle-related crashes in urban areas. Drivers and bicyclists often approach crossings from different directions at the same time, which can increase the chance of a collision if visibility or reaction time is limited.
Turning vehicles, heavy traffic, and parked cars near corners may also make it harder for drivers to see cyclists entering an intersection. Even lower-speed crashes can lead to injuries because bicyclists have little physical protection during an impact.
Injury patterns in bicycle accidents often involve the legs, ankles, arms, or head, depending on how the rider falls or where contact occurs. Road markings, traffic signals, and lighting conditions may also be reviewed when investigators examine how a bicycle crash happened at a busy intersection.
