Contra Costa County, CA (July 24, 2026) – A bicyclist was injured on Wednesday afternoon, July 22, when a black Honda struck them on the eastbound I-580 off-ramp to Marina Bay Parkway in Richmond. The off-ramp leads into Richmond’s Marina Bay neighborhood, a waterfront area along the San Francisco Bay shoreline.

The collision was reported around 12:05 p.m., and an ambulance was requested to the scene. No further details about the extent of the bicyclist’s injuries were available.

It was not immediately clear what led to the wreck. The cause remains under investigation, and we hope for a full recovery for the bicyclist who was hurt.

We hope for strength and healing for those hurt in this collision.

Why Are Freeway Off-Ramps Risky for Bicyclists?

Freeway off-ramps can be especially risky spots for bicyclists, since they’re built for cars merging on and off high-speed roadways rather than for slower-moving traffic. A driver exiting a freeway is focused on merging safely into the next street, which can make it easy to overlook a bicyclist crossing the same path.

Visibility is a major factor in many of these incidents. Off-ramps sometimes curve or slope downward, limiting how far ahead a driver can see before reaching an intersection. A bicyclist who is smaller and slower than surrounding vehicles can be harder to spot in that limited window of time.

Cities have taken different approaches to make these crossings safer, including painted bike lanes, raised crossings, and better signage where an off-ramp meets a city street. Even with these changes, drivers and bicyclists both benefit from extra caution at these transition points, where fast highway traffic suddenly meets slower local streets.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
