Why Bicycle Crashes at Intersections Can Be Serious
Intersections are among the most common places for bicycle crashes because drivers and cyclists often approach from different directions at the same time. Turning movements, limited visibility, and traffic signal timing can all contribute to collisions involving bicycles.
Bicyclists have far less physical protection than occupants inside passenger vehicles, which increases the chance of injury during an impact. Investigators reviewing these crashes often examine roadway markings, traffic flow, witness statements, and any available surveillance footage to determine how the collision occurred. Evening travel conditions may also affect visibility for both drivers and cyclists, particularly at busy urban intersections.
