BLACKWOOD, Camden County, N.J., Oct. 1, 2026 — Two people were seriously hurt Tuesday night, September 29, after a multi-vehicle crash shut down part of the Black Horse Pike in Blackwood, New Jersey. The crash happened around 11 p.m. at State Highway 168 and Almonesson Road.
According to preliminary reports cited by police, a Toyota Venza was heading southbound on Black Horse Pike when it crossed into the northbound lane and struck the rear of a Honda Accord. The Toyota reportedly continued through the Almonesson Road intersection, left the roadway, and struck a utility pole guide wire and a brick business sign before overturning in a nearby parking lot.
First responders removed two occupants from the Toyota. Both were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The Honda’s driver was not hurt.
Debris from the crash scattered into a nearby Walgreens parking lot, and at least two vehicles sustained heavy damage.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. We wish the injured a speedy recovery.
What the Numbers Say About Multi-Vehicle Crashes
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, passenger vehicles made up 92 percent of registered vehicles and 89 percent of vehicle miles traveled in 2023. That means the vast majority of multi-vehicle collisions, including rear-end and cross-lane crashes like the one reported in Blackwood, involve ordinary passenger cars and SUVs instead of commercial trucks or motorcycles.
Crashes where one vehicle crosses the center line into oncoming or adjacent traffic often start with a single driving error, whether that’s a lapse in attention, a mechanical failure, or an attempt to avoid another hazard. Because the vehicle is already moving at speed when it crosses lanes, the resulting impact frequently involves a second or third vehicle before the first one leaves the roadway entirely.
Rollovers that follow a lane-departure crash tend to happen when a vehicle strikes a fixed object, such as a pole or sign, at an angle that trips the tires and flips the chassis. Investigators typically piece together the sequence using skid marks, debris fields, and vehicle damage patterns instead of relying on a single witness account.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I’m involved in a multi-car crash?
Call 911, check for injuries, and move to a safe area if possible. Exchange information with other drivers and wait for police to document the scene, since official reports help clarify what happened.
What injuries are common in crashes like this one?
Rear-end and rollover collisions often cause whiplash, broken bones, and head or chest injuries, particularly for occupants in a vehicle that leaves the roadway or overturns.
What usually causes a vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic?
Common factors include distraction, impairment, fatigue, mechanical problems, or an attempt to avoid another obstacle. The exact cause in any given crash is typically determined only after police complete their investigation.
Does speed make these crashes worse?
Yes. Higher speeds reduce a driver’s ability to react and increase the force involved in any collision, which raises the chance of serious injury or a vehicle losing control.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Blackwood, New Jersey
If you’re involved in a crash in Blackwood, stay at the scene and call for emergency help right away. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation is worth getting, since some injuries like concussions or internal trauma aren’t obvious right away.
Take photos of the vehicles and surroundings if you’re able, and get contact information from anyone else involved. A copy of the official police report can be useful later for insurance purposes. Giving yourself time to rest and follow up with a doctor afterward matters just as much as the immediate response.
