Why Patient Refusals Sometimes Happen After Traffic Crashes
After a roadway crash, some people choose not to receive further medical treatment even when EMS evaluates them at the site. This can happen for several reasons. A person may feel only minor pain at first, or adrenaline may temporarily mask symptoms that develop later. In other cases, those involved may decide to seek care privately after leaving the roadway.
Medical crews generally assess visible injuries, ask questions about pain or dizziness, and monitor for signs of trauma before a refusal is accepted. Even low-speed collisions can lead to delayed soreness, headaches, or neck pain hours later. Because symptoms may not appear immediately, many people continue monitoring their health after leaving the roadway and seek additional evaluation if discomfort increases over time.
