BLENDON TOWNSHIP, Ottawa County, Mich., Oct. 7, 2026 — Two people were seriously hurt Tuesday morning, October 6, in a three-vehicle crash at 72nd Avenue and Blair Street in Blendon Township, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. A third driver was treated at the scene, and one vehicle caught fire after leaving the road.
The sheriff's office said the crash happened just after 7:15 a.m. when an SUV traveling north on 72nd Avenue rear-ended a sedan that was slowing to turn left onto Blair Street. The impact reportedly pushed the sedan across the center line, where it collided head-on with a car heading south on 72nd Avenue.
The SUV then left the east shoulder of the road and went into a ditch, where it caught fire and was fully engulfed, deputies said. The driver got out before the fire spread and was treated and released at the scene. Two teenage passengers in the sedan were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, according to the sheriff's office. The driver of the southbound car was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.
The Blendon Township Fire Department assisted at the scene, authorities said. The crash remains under investigation, and no further details on the cause have been released.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.
How Investigators Piece Together a Multi-Vehicle Crash
Figuring out exactly how a chain-reaction crash unfolded takes more than a quick look at the wreckage. Deputies and crash reconstruction specialists typically measure skid marks, map where each vehicle came to rest, and document road and weather conditions before anything is moved. When a vehicle fire is involved, investigators often wait for the scene to cool and for fire crews to clear the area before examining the vehicle itself, which can add time to the process.
Speeds, points of impact, and who struck whom first are often reconstructed using data pulled from vehicle event recorders, similar to a "black box," along with witness statements and physical evidence at the scene. None of this happens instantly. A full crash report, especially one involving three vehicles, commonly takes weeks to finalize.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,979 passenger-car occupants were killed in two-vehicle crashes involving a passenger car and a light truck in 2023. That gap in size and weight between vehicle types is one reason investigators carefully examine impact angles and speeds in multi-vehicle collisions before drawing conclusions about fault or cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most car crashes happen?
A large share of crashes occur on local and intersecting roads, often at intersections where one vehicle is slowing, turning, or stopped.
What can drivers do to avoid being involved in a crash like this?
Leaving extra following distance, especially near intersections where vehicles may slow suddenly to turn, is one of the simplest ways to avoid a rear-end collision that can set off a larger chain-reaction crash.
What injuries are common in multi-vehicle crashes?
Occupants often suffer whiplash, broken bones, and head or chest injuries from the force of impact, with severity depending on speed, seating position, and whether a vehicle rolls over or catches fire.
What usually causes these kinds of crashes?
Following too closely, misjudging another driver's speed while slowing to turn, and distracted driving are among the most frequently cited factors in rear-end and chain-reaction crashes.
