BLOOMFIELD, Hartford County, Conn., Oct. 3, 2026 — Two people were taken to hospitals on Thursday afternoon, October 1, after a Toyota Corolla and a Tesla collided at Cottage Grove Road and Savin Road.
Crews with Bloomfield's Blue Hills Fire District were called to the intersection just after 1 p.m., Deputy Chief Vincent Jaunai said. One driver, behind the wheel of the Tesla, had to be extricated from the vehicle.
Jaunai said both cars sustained heavy damage and that airbags deployed in the crash. The two drivers were taken to separate area hospitals. Their conditions have not been released.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. No further details, including charges or contributing factors, have been released as of this writing.
We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.
How Investigators Piece Together a Crash at an Intersection
Work at an intersection crash scene usually starts with the basics: getting everyone out safely, clearing the roadway, and documenting the position of each vehicle before anything is moved. Officers typically photograph skid marks, debris fields, and vehicle damage, since that evidence can disappear once tow trucks arrive or traffic resumes.
From there, a fuller picture takes shape over days or weeks, not hours. Investigators may pull data from a vehicle's onboard systems, interview witnesses, and review any available video from nearby businesses or traffic cameras. If a case involves serious injury, a formal reconstruction can take time because it relies on measurements, lab results, and sometimes outside specialists.
That is also why agencies are usually slow to release names or a cause. Officials typically wait until next of kin have been notified before identifying anyone involved, and toxicology or lab results can take weeks to come back from a state lab. A short "under investigation" update is normal at this stage, not a sign that something is being withheld.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should someone do after a car accident like this one?
Call 911, stay as still as possible if hurt, and avoid moving an injured person unless there's immediate danger. Exchange information with the other driver if you're able, and let police document the scene.
What injuries are common in intersection collisions?
Drivers and passengers usually suffer whiplash, head or facial injuries from airbag deployment, and broken bones or bruising from the impact. Extrication, when needed, can add time before injuries are fully assessed.
What usually causes crashes like this?
Common factors include failure to yield, running a red light or stop sign, distracted driving, and misjudging another vehicle's speed. Investigators look at all of these before determining a cause.
Does speed make intersection crashes worse?
Yes. Higher speed means less time to react and a harder impact, which raises the odds of serious injury even in a crash that would otherwise be minor.
