Bloomington, IN (January 20, 2026) – Two people were killed and three others were injured following a devastating house fire early Sunday morning, January 18, in the 3800 block of East Anderson Road in Bloomington.
Authorities reported that the fire broke out at approximately 2:40 a.m., prompting multiple emergency calls from the area. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies and the Monroe County Fire Protection District responded to the residence and found an active fire involving an attached garage. Investigators also discovered a vehicle that had crashed into the garage, which was already burning when crews arrived.
As emergency personnel worked to control the fire and secure the property, deputies made contact with an individual who had managed to escape but was suffering from severe burns. A second individual was later located and provided information to investigators at the scene. Both injured victims were transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital before being transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis for additional treatment due to the seriousness of their conditions.
During the response, deputies and assisting agencies located two other individuals connected to the residence, both of whom were ultimately found deceased. The Monroe County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the identities of the victims at a later time.
As the investigation continued, officers identified and located a person of interest in a wooded area near the home about an hour after first arriving. The Bloomington Police Department and Indiana State Police assisted in the search and response.
Authorities stated that charges are pending as the investigation remains ongoing, and an earlier update noted that the individual was being held at Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis due to injuries sustained during the incident.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families of the victims who lost their lives, and we hope the injured individuals are able to recover in the days ahead.
