BLOOMINGTON, Hennepin County, Minn., Oct. 14, 2026 — Two people suffered life-threatening injuries Monday afternoon, October 12, when a pickup truck entered an interstate ramp going the wrong way and struck two other vehicles in Bloomington, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. A third driver was not hurt, the agency reported.

The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. on northbound Interstate 35W at the 82nd Street ramp. State troopers said a 2013 Ford F150 entered the ramp traveling southbound in the northbound lanes and collided with a 2010 Honda Civic and a 2014 Acura RDX, both headed north.

The Civic's driver, a 32 year old Minneapolis woman, and the F150's driver, a 78 year old Bloomington man, were both taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with injuries described as life-threatening. The Acura's driver, a 24 year old Mounds View woman, was not injured. Bloomington Fire, Bloomington Police and Allina medics responded to the scene.

The circumstances that led the truck onto the ramp in the wrong direction remain under investigation. We wish the injured a speedy recovery.

What Actually Reduces Wrong-Way Crashes on Interstate Ramps

Wrong-way crashes like this one often trace back to how a ramp is designed, not just a driver's mistake. Transportation agencies across the country have cut these crashes by adding oversized "wrong way" and "do not enter" signs mounted lower, at windshield height, where a confused driver is more likely to catch them in headlights at night. Some ramps now use red reflective pavement arrows and extra lighting at the exact point where a driver might turn the wrong direction.

Stopping distance and vehicle control also depend heavily on conditions a driver cannot always see coming. Even on dry pavement, speed and reaction time determine whether a driver correcting a wrong turn can stop before reaching oncoming traffic. Wet roads, debris, or dim lighting at dusk or night stretch that distance further and narrow the window to react. Ramp curvature and sightlines matter too: a ramp that curves sharply or sits in a low-visibility area gives a driver less time to notice the error.

Beyond signage, some states have experimented with sensor-triggered flashing beacons that activate only when a vehicle is detected moving the wrong way, alerting both the driver and approaching traffic. Median barriers and clearer lane separation at ramp junctions also reduce the chance that a wrong-way vehicle reaches a high-speed lane before anyone can react. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 2,442,581 people were injured in traffic crashes in 2023, a reminder that infrastructure fixes work alongside driver attention, not instead of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What typically causes car accidents like this one?

Wrong-way entries onto ramps or highways are often linked to driver disorientation, impairment, or missed signage, especially at night or in unfamiliar areas. Investigators typically look at ramp design, lighting, and driver condition when reconstructing how a vehicle ended up traveling against traffic.

How much does speed affect the severity of a crash?

Higher speed increases both the force of impact and the distance needed to stop or swerve. Crashes involving a head-on or near head-on impact, like wrong-way collisions, tend to produce more serious injuries as speed rises, even by small increments.

Why is distracted driving considered so dangerous?

Distraction delays a driver's recognition of a hazard, such as a wrong-way vehicle, cutting the time available to brake or steer away. Even a few seconds of delay can be the difference between a near miss and a collision.

Do weather and road conditions play a role even when the pavement is dry?

Yes. While wet or icy roads clearly reduce traction, dry conditions can still mask risks like glare, nighttime visibility, or a ramp's layout. Investigators routinely document surface and lighting conditions as part of any crash review.

What to Do After a Wrong-Way Car Accident in Bloomington, MN

If you're ever involved in or witness a wrong-way crash, call 911 immediately and, if it's safe, move away from the roadway instead of standing near moving traffic. Even if you feel fine afterward, seek a medical evaluation, since injuries from a sudden collision don't always show symptoms right away.

Keep a record of who responded, including police, fire, or ambulance crews, and ask how to obtain the official crash report once it's released. In Bloomington and elsewhere, that report can take time to finalize, especially when a crash remains under investigation. Giving yourself time to process the event and leaning on family or local support resources can also matter as much as the practical steps.
