Frequently Asked Questions
Why are head-on crashes so severe?
Head-on crashes combine the speed of both vehicles into one impact, which usually means more force is transferred to the people inside than in a typical rear-end or side-impact crash.
How can drivers avoid a head-on collision?
Staying alert, keeping to the proper lane and slowing down on unfamiliar or narrow roads, especially at night, gives drivers more time to react if another vehicle drifts into their path.
Where do most head-on crashes happen?
They commonly occur on two-lane roads without a median, particularly at intersections, curves or spots with limited visibility, where there's little separation between opposing traffic.
What role does passing play in head-on crashes?
Attempting to pass on a two-lane road puts a driver directly in the path of oncoming traffic, so misjudging the distance or speed of an approaching vehicle can lead directly to a head-on impact.
