BROKEN BOW, McCurtain County, Okla., Oct. 7, 2026 — A passenger died Tuesday morning, October 6, after a vehicle rolled over on Merry Hwy in McCurtain County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The crash happened about 10 miles north of OK-3.

Troopers said a 39-year-old Broken Bow man was driving south on Merry Hwy around 11:30 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve. His vehicle left the roadway, and he reportedly overcorrected, causing it to roll over, according to the patrol's report.

A passenger in the vehicle, identified by troopers as a 30-year-old woman, died from her injuries. The driver's condition has not been released.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash. No further details, including whether charges are expected, have been made public.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

When Rollover Crashes on Rural Highways Are Most Likely

Rollovers tied to curves and lane departures do not follow the same clock as rush-hour wrecks. They cluster on rural two-lane highways where speeds are higher and shoulders are narrow, and they can happen at any hour, including the middle of the day, when a driver drifts off the roadway and overcorrects.

Midday and early-afternoon rollovers are often linked to distraction or a moment of inattention. Weekend and overnight crashes on the same kind of road tend to carry a higher share of impairment and fatigue. Weather also plays a role: wet or loose shoulders make it easier for a tire to catch and pull a vehicle off its path once it leaves the pavement.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 40,901 people were killed in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023. Rural highway curves, where a small steering correction can turn into a full rollover, remain a steady contributor to that total.

Does impairment often factor into fatal rollovers?

It can, though not always. Investigators typically test for impairment as a standard part of a fatal crash investigation and release findings once confirmed.
