Why Crashes Between Trucks and Cyclists Can Be Especially Severe
Urban streets like 16th Avenue in Brooklyn often carry a mix of cars, trucks, and bicycles using the same travel lanes. When large vehicles share narrow streets with cyclists, differences in size and visibility can create hazardous situations.
Cyclists sometimes move around parked or double-parked vehicles to continue traveling along the roadway. This movement can place them closer to passing traffic, where drivers may have limited time or space to react.
Large trucks also have wider turning paths and areas around the vehicle where cyclists may be difficult to see. When a bicycle and a heavy vehicle occupy the same lane or space on the roadway, the lack of physical protection for the rider can increase the risk of serious injury during a crash.
