BROOKLYN, Kings County, NY, Sept. 17, 2026 — A 35-year-old man died after he was thrown from a dirt bike and then struck by a car Tuesday night, September 15, near Malcolm X Boulevard and Macon Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.

According to authorities, the man was riding a dirt bike north on Malcolm X Boulevard around 9 p.m. when he hit a dip in the road and was ejected onto the roadway. A car traveling in the same direction then struck him, police said. He was taken to Kings County Hospital in critical condition and later died there, authorities said.

The man and the driver of the car were identified by authorities. The latter stayed at the scene and was taken into custody, according to police, as he faces charges that include criminally negligent homicide and unlicensed operation.

The city's collision investigation squad is handling the case, according to police. No further details have been released.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

How Impairment Raises the Stakes in Dirt Bike and Motorcycle Crashes

Two-wheeled vehicles give a rider almost nothing to absorb a sudden jolt. A pothole, a dip in the pavement, or a quick swerve can throw a rider off the bike in a way that a car's frame and seatbelt would otherwise prevent. Once a rider is on the ground in a travel lane, the outcome often depends on what happens in the next few seconds, and that is where driver impairment becomes a decisive factor.

Alcohol and drugs slow reaction time and narrow a driver's field of attention. A driver who is impaired may not see a person or object in the roadway until it is too late to brake or steer around it. Fatigue and distraction produce a similar delay, but impairment tends to compound the problem because it also affects judgment about speed and following distance.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 49,989 pedalcyclists were injured in traffic crashes in 2023. That figure reflects how often people on two wheels are hurt by the vehicles around them, not just by their own operation of the bike, and it helps explain why investigators look closely at the driver's condition and conduct in cases where a rider ends up in the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are fatal crashes like this investigated?

Specialized police units, often called collision or crash investigation squads, examine the scene, review any available video, interview witnesses, and reconstruct the sequence of events to determine how the crash unfolded.

How long do these investigations typically take?

Initial findings can come within days, but a full investigation, including toxicology results and any criminal charges, often takes weeks or longer depending on the complexity of the case.

What role does impairment play in fatal crashes?

Impairment from alcohol or drugs is one of the most common factors in fatal crashes nationally. It slows reaction time and reduces a driver's ability to avoid a hazard that appears suddenly, such as a person in the roadway.

Where do fatal crashes involving riders or pedestrians most often happen?

They frequently occur on wider roads with higher speeds, at night, and at locations with limited lighting or uneven pavement, all of which reduce the time a driver has to react.

What to Do After a Dirt Bike or Motorcycle Crash in Brooklyn, NY

Anyone involved in or who witnesses a crash involving a bike and a vehicle should call 911 immediately so police and medical responders can reach the scene. If you are able to do so safely, note what you saw, including the direction of travel, road conditions, and any details about the vehicles involved. Cooperating with the collision investigation squad and giving a clear account of events helps authorities build an accurate picture of what happened.
