Frequently Asked Questions

What usually causes pedestrian crashes like this one?

Common factors include drivers failing to yield at crosswalks, distraction, turning movements where a driver's attention is elsewhere, and poor visibility. Investigators typically review all of these before determining a cause.

Does vehicle speed change the outcome for a pedestrian?

Yes. Even modest reductions in speed give drivers more time to stop and lower the force of impact, which can be the difference between minor and serious injury.

Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?

A large share occur at or near intersections and crosswalks, usually in areas with foot traffic from schools, transit stops, or commercial strips.

Are pedestrian crashes more likely after dark?

Nighttime and low-light hours see a higher share of pedestrian crashes than daylight hours, largely because drivers have less time to spot someone crossing.
