BUENA PARK, Orange County, Calif., Oct. 18, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash shut down several lanes of westbound State Route 91 near Beach Boulevard Friday night, October 16, according to the California Highway Patrol. The wreck involved at least five vehicles and prompted a request for medical help at the scene.

The CHP's traffic log shows the crash was first reported shortly before 8:40 p.m. as a collision involving a white pickup and two other vehicles, blocking the carpool lane and the two left lanes of the westbound freeway. Within minutes, dispatch logs describe a three-vehicle collision involving a dark sedan, an SUV and a dark pickup, and a separate update listed a gray Honda HR-V, a white Chevrolet pickup and a black Volkswagen Jetta among the vehicles involved.

A pink Audi Q3 was also reported disabled on scene with no reported injuries. A Volkswagen GTI hatchback was moved to the center divider, and its occupant requested medical evaluation.

California Highway Patrol units closed lanes to manage the scene, and a tow truck was requested to begin clearing vehicles shortly after 9 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does reduced visibility contribute to pileups like this one? When drivers can't see traffic slowing ahead, whether from darkness, fog, glare or smoke, they often react too late, which is how an initial collision can draw in several more vehicles within seconds.

Why does following distance matter so much on freeways? A longer gap between vehicles gives drivers more time to brake or steer around trouble. On fast-moving freeway lanes like SR-91, even a short following distance can remove the margin needed to avoid a chain-reaction crash.

Are secondary crashes common after a first wreck on the freeway? Yes. Once lanes are blocked, oncoming traffic often doesn't see the backup in time, and additional vehicles can strike the original wreck or each other, which is why responders move quickly to close lanes and route traffic around the scene.

Why are multi-vehicle crashes harder to investigate than single-car wrecks? Investigators have to sort out the sequence of impacts, how many vehicles were actually involved, and who struck whom first, often based on conflicting accounts and scattered debris across multiple lanes.

What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Buena Park, CA

If you're involved in a pileup, try to stay inside your vehicle unless it's unsafe, especially on a freeway shoulder or center divider where moving traffic remains a hazard. Turn on hazard lights if they still work, and call 911 to confirm that help is on the way, even if you believe others have already reported it. Adrenaline can mask injuries, so it's worth getting checked by paramedics at the scene or at an emergency room afterward, even if you feel fine. Once you're safe, write down what you remember, including the position of other vehicles and lanes, since details can blur quickly after a chaotic multi-car crash. Keep any paperwork from the California Highway Patrol and your insurer in one place in case you need it later.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
