Colorado Springs, CO (June 15, 2026) – Nine people were taken to the hospital after a collision involving a Bustang bus and a fire engine in downtown Colorado Springs on Saturday morning, June 13.

The crash occurred at approximately 10 a.m. at the intersection of Tejon Street and Bijou Street. According to fire department officials, the fire engine was responding to a medical emergency when the collision happened. Preliminary findings indicate the fire truck was traveling southbound on Tejon Street while the Bustang bus was traveling westbound on Bijou Street.

The police said the front of the fire engine struck the front passenger side of the bus. Four firefighters and five people aboard the bus were transported to local hospitals. Officials said the severity of the injuries has not been confirmed, but there were no indications that any injuries were expected to be fatal.

Two additional vehicles were involved after being struck during the crash. One vehicle was parked, while another contained two occupants. Authorities said those occupants were not injured. The fire engine involved in the collision was declared a total loss. We hope those injured recover fully and quickly.

Why Emergency Vehicle Crashes at Intersections Can Be Especially Severe

Intersections are among the most common locations for serious traffic collisions because multiple traffic movements converge in a limited space. When emergency vehicles respond to calls, they may travel under special traffic exemptions, but drivers and emergency personnel still face significant risks when approaching intersections.

Large vehicles such as buses and fire engines require more distance to stop and maneuver than passenger cars. When these vehicles collide, the size and weight of the vehicles can increase the impact force and lead to injuries to multiple occupants. Emergency responses, traffic congestion, visibility limitations, and driver reaction times can all affect how safely vehicles move through intersections. Investigations into these crashes often focus on vehicle paths, traffic controls, visibility conditions, and the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
