Frequently Asked Questions
Why are rollover crashes especially deadly?
A rolling vehicle can throw unbelted occupants against the roof, windows, or pavement, and the cabin itself can cave in as the vehicle tumbles, raising the risk of serious head, neck, and spine injuries.
Which vehicles tend to roll over most?
Taller, narrower vehicles such as SUVs, pickups, and vans have a higher center of gravity, which makes them more likely to tip and roll than low, wide passenger cars.
Does wearing a seat belt change the outcome in a rollover?
Yes. A seat belt keeps an occupant in place during the roll, cutting the chance of being ejected or struck inside the cabin, which are the most common ways people are killed or badly hurt in these crashes.
What is meant by a "tripped" rollover?
It happens when a vehicle's tires catch on something, such as a curb, soft shoulder, or guardrail, and the sudden sideways resistance flips the vehicle, as opposed to a rollover caused purely by sharp steering at speed.
