CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, St. Clair County, Ill., Sept. 23, 2026 — A 17-year-old died Wednesday morning, September 23, after a crash involving a van carrying Belleville West High School students near the intersection of Illinois Route 15 and Pocket Road in Cahokia Heights, Illinois. Several other students were hurt and taken to hospitals in St. Louis.
The St. Clair County coroner identified the teen who died as Zer'Real B. Hinds, according to Coroner Calvin Dye. Dye said Hinds was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cahokia Heights Police Chief Thomas Trice said the van took part in the collision at about 8:20 a.m. Trice said six juveniles and two adults were involved. He said civilians and firefighters carried out what he called "heroic acts" pulling some of the children from the wreck.
Video from the scene showed a vehicle off the roadway that appeared to have been covered with a tarp, and at least one vehicle with apparent fire damage. Belleville West Superintendent Marshaun Warren confirmed Hinds was a student in the district and said the school has contacted the families of all students involved.
The Illinois State Police's accident reconstruction team has been called in to assist Cahokia Heights police with the investigation, which remains active. The St. Clair County coroner and emergency management agency also responded to the scene.
