CAJON PASS, San Bernardino County, Calif., Oct. 29, 2026 — A chain-reaction crash involving several vehicles and at least one rollover shut down lanes on northbound Interstate 15 near State Route 138 early Thursday morning, October 29, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash was first reported before 6 a.m. near the Interstate 15 and State Route 138 interchange in the Cajon Pass area. Initial reports to dispatchers described multiple vehicles pulled to the right shoulder, one vehicle overturned on its roof on the shoulder, and another vehicle off the right side of the road in a ditch. Debris was reported scattered across traffic lanes.
Among the vehicles involved were a car described as facing the wrong way, with its driver initially unsure whether she had come to rest on the shoulder or in the center divider, and a pickup truck that collided with an SUV on the right shoulder, according to radio traffic. One caller told dispatchers she believed she had been hit by multiple vehicles. Another driver reported being struck from behind near his trailer by a vehicle that appeared to be backing up after sliding sideways in the lanes, though he could not describe the vehicle. A big rig and its trailer were also reported stopped along the roadway and were later confirmed to be involved.
The extent of injuries has not been released. A tow truck was requested at the scene, and additional vehicles were eventually cleared with the help of a tow rotation service. Caltrans Freeway Service Patrol also responded and later closed out its portion of the incident. The California Highway Patrol has not said whether speed, weather or another factor contributed to the crash, and the investigation remains active.
We wish those injured a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What causes a vehicle to roll over?
Rollovers typically happen when a vehicle loses control, usually after a sharp steering movement, a sideswipe or a collision with another vehicle, causing it to trip on a curb, soft shoulder or another car and tip onto its side or roof.
Why are rollover crashes dangerous?
A rollover can throw unbelted occupants against the roof, windows or out of the vehicle, and the roof itself can cave in under the weight of the vehicle as it tumbles.
Which vehicles are most prone to rolling over?
Taller, narrower vehicles with a higher center of gravity, such as pickup trucks and SUVs, are more likely to roll over than lower, wider passenger cars.
Does wearing a seat belt matter in a rollover?
Yes. A seat belt keeps an occupant positioned inside the vehicle during a rollover, which lowers the chance of being thrown against the roof or ejected.
