Why Center Line Crossings on Rural Highways Can Lead to Severe Injuries
Two-lane highways like NC 18 rely on drivers staying within their marked lanes. When a vehicle crosses the center line, it places oncoming traffic at immediate risk. With no physical barrier between directions of travel, head-on or near head-on collisions can occur in seconds.
Ambulances and other emergency vehicles are large and heavy, which can increase the force of impact during a crash. Even when not responding to an emergency, these vehicles may travel at regular highway speeds. When combined with the weight of an SUV or passenger vehicle, the resulting collision can cause severe injuries.
Rural highways often have curves, changing elevations, and limited shoulders. Drivers are encouraged to remain focused, avoid distractions, and maintain proper lane position to help reduce the risk of cross-center crashes.
