Frequently Asked Questions
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Speed, the angle of impact, and whether occupants are wearing seat belts all play a role. Crashes at intersections, like this one, often involve high-speed impacts from the side, which tend to cause more severe injuries than head-on or rear-end collisions at lower speeds.
How does speed affect crash survivability?
Higher speeds mean more force at impact and less time for a driver to react or avoid a collision. Even modest increases in speed can substantially raise the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.
Why does seat belt use matter so much?
Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown from their seats or ejected from the vehicle during a collision, which are among the leading causes of death in serious crashes.
What should families do after a fatal crash?
Families can request a copy of the official crash report from the investigating agency once it's available, and can reach out to the sheriff's office with questions about the investigation's status.
What to Do After a Fatal Intersection Crash in Caledonia, Mississippi
If you witness or are involved in a crash at a rural intersection, call 911 right away and stay put if it's safe to do so. Even if injuries aren't immediately obvious, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries from a collision don't show symptoms right away. Exchange information with other drivers if you're able, and avoid discussing fault at the scene. Take photos of the vehicles, the roadway, and any relevant signage or signals if you can do so safely. Once law enforcement has finished its investigation, you can typically request the official report to help with insurance or other follow-up matters.
