CANTON, Van Zandt County, Texas, Oct. 22, 2026 — Five people, including four children and their mother, died in an overnight house fire early on Wednesday, October 21, off County Road 4127 in Canton. Two other people were hospitalized, one of whom later died, according to the Van Zandt County fire marshal.

Fire crews got a call around 12:30 a.m. reporting people trapped inside the home, the Van Zandt County fire marshal said. Fire departments from Canton, South Van Zandt, Ben Wheeler and Wills Point all responded.

When crews arrived, three people inside the home had already gotten out on their own, but four children remained trapped. Firefighters breached an exterior wall to reach them. Three of the four children had already died by the time crews got inside, officials said.

The three children who died at the scene were reportedly a 3-year-old girl and two boys, ages 5 and 8. A 10-year-old boy and the children's mother were flown to a Dallas hospital in critical condition; both were later confirmed to have died, bringing the total number of deaths to five.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Canton ISD confirmed that students from its elementary and intermediate campuses were among those lost, and said counselors would be made available to students and staff.

Our sympathies are with the families of everyone who lost their lives.

What happens after a fatal house fire is reported? A fire marshal or similar investigator typically examines the scene to determine origin and cause, which can take days or weeks depending on the damage and complexity of the case.
