CANTONMENT, Escambia County, Fla., Oct. 2, 2026 — A pedestrian suffered serious injuries Thursday afternoon, October 1, after being struck by an SUV on County Road 97 in Cantonment. The Florida Highway Patrol said the man was airlifted to a Pensacola hospital following the crash.
The crash happened around 4:22 p.m. near Andrea Lane, just south of West Kingsfield Road. A 66-year-old Pensacola woman was driving an SUV south on County Road 97 when the vehicle's front end struck a 22-year-old Cantonment man who was walking north in the southbound travel lane.
The pedestrian's injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening. He was flown from the scene by a LifeFlight helicopter to a hospital in Pensacola.
The driver was wearing a seatbelt and was not hurt.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the investigation into the crash is continuing. We wish those injured a full recovery.
Pedestrian Crashes and What the Numbers Show
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 68,244 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2023. That figure covers everything from minor scrapes to injuries requiring hospitalization and long recoveries, and it reflects how often people on foot share the same roads as vehicles moving at speed.
Rural and semi-rural highways like the ones that cut through communities such as Cantonment often lack sidewalks or lighting, which forces pedestrians into the roadway itself. When someone is walking in a travel lane, even briefly, the distance a driver has to see and react shrinks fast, especially after dark or at dusk.
Researchers who study these crashes point to speed and visibility as the two factors that repeat again and again. A pedestrian struck at higher speed is more likely to be seriously hurt, and low light conditions make it harder for drivers to spot someone walking along the shoulder or in a lane until they're close.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility makes it harder for drivers to see people walking along roads, and a large share of pedestrian deaths and injuries nationally occur after dark.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
Call 911 immediately, avoid moving if injured, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor at first. Some injuries, especially head or internal trauma, aren't obvious right away.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In most states, including Florida, pedestrians in a marked or unmarked crosswalk generally have the right of way, though drivers and walkers both share responsibility for safety at intersections.
How can drivers watch for pedestrians more effectively?
Slowing down in areas without sidewalks, scanning the road shoulders, and staying alert near intersections and curves can help drivers spot people walking sooner.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Cantonment, FL
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 right away and stay on the scene until help arrives. Anyone injured should be seen by medical personnel promptly, even if symptoms seem minor at first, since some injuries take time to surface.
Take note of details while they're fresh: where you were standing or walking, what you saw, and the time of day. If you're a witness, stay available for responding officers who may need a statement.
Cantonment residents dealing with the aftermath of a pedestrian crash should also follow up with their own medical provider in the days after, and keep any paperwork from first responders or hospital visits in case it's needed later.
