Henrietta, NY (May 21, 2026) – A motorcyclist was hurt on Wednesday night after a car cut across all lanes of I-390 South near the Lehigh Station Road exit in Henrietta, causing the rider to lose control. The accident happened around 8:45 p.m and witnesses on the road told investigators that the car had been in the far left lane before crossing all the way to the exit.
The motorcyclist, who had been traveling in the rightmost lane, was thrown from the bike after losing control in reaction to the other vehicle’s sudden move. The rider was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries, while the other driver was located and interviewed following the collision.
No traffic citations had been issued as of the initial report on the wreck. The case remains open as deputies continue to review what took place, and further details will be shared when they are provided.
We are relieved the rider’s injuries were not life-threatening and wish them a smooth recovery.
Why Last-Minute Lane Changes to Highway Exits Are So Dangerous
When a driver realizes too late that they are about to miss an exit, the instinct to cut across multiple lanes at once creates serious risk for everyone nearby. Other drivers and riders have little time to react to a vehicle suddenly moving laterally across traffic at highway speeds. Motorcycles are especially vulnerable in these moments because they have a smaller contact patch with the road and less stability margin than a car.
A sharp braking or swerving reaction, even a correct one, can cause a bike to slide or tip. Highway design generally accounts for this by providing advance exit signage, but drivers who are distracted or unfamiliar with a route may still miss the window and make dangerous last-second decisions. These types of crashes are difficult to anticipate and usually happen too fast for the affected rider to avoid.
