Carbon Co., WY (March 12, 2026) – A large multi-vehicle crash and several additional collisions forced the closure of a major stretch of Interstate 80 across southern Wyoming.
Emergency units responded to the main crash on Wednesday, March 11, near mile marker 259 eastbound between Laramie and Sinclair. Authorities reported that approximately 20 vehicles were involved in the pileup.
Two people injured in the crash were flown from the scene by helicopter for medical treatment. Officials have not released further details about the extent of their injuries.
Additional crashes were also reported along the same corridor between mile markers 264 and 269, complicating response efforts. Transportation officials implemented rolling closures along the interstate as crews worked to secure the area and assist those involved.
Crews spent hours clearing damaged vehicles, inspecting the roadway, and checking nearby bridges for possible damage. Traffic across the interstate corridor was halted while the work was completed.
Authorities continue to investigate the crashes, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Winter Road Conditions Can Lead to Chain-Reaction Crashes
Winter weather can quickly change driving conditions on highways. Ice, slush, and blowing snow often reduce traction, making it harder for vehicles to stop or slow down.
When traffic is moving at highway speeds, even a small loss of control can trigger a chain-reaction crash. If one vehicle slides or stops suddenly, drivers behind may not have enough time or distance to avoid hitting it.
Strong winds and drifting snow can also reduce visibility, which makes it more difficult for drivers to see hazards ahead. When several vehicles encounter slick pavement simultaneously, multiple collisions can occur in a short period.
Leaving extra distance between vehicles and reducing speed can help drivers react more safely when winter road conditions develop.
