Why Road Conditions and Speed Combine to Cause Intersection Crashes
Crashes at highway intersections like Route 13 and Greenbriar Road often come down to simple physics: a vehicle traveling at highway speed needs much more room to stop than one on a slower city street. When a driver misjudges the gap needed to clear an intersection or stop in time, there is little room to correct once the vehicle is committed.
Wet pavement, loose gravel, or glare at certain times of day can stretch stopping distance even further, turning a routine gap in traffic into a crash. A driver who would normally stop in time on dry pavement may instead slide into the intersection or into opposing traffic.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, passenger vehicles made up 92 percent of registered vehicles and 89 percent of vehicle miles traveled in 2023. With so much of the vehicle fleet made up of everyday passenger cars and trucks, intersection crashes involving two such vehicles, as the one reported in Carterville, remain one of the most common types of collisions on rural highways.
