CARTWRIGHT, Bryan County, Okla., Oct. 5, 2026 — A 74-year-old Denison man was hospitalized Saturday afternoon, October 3, after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 91/Boat Club Road in Cartwright, Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just after 2 p.m., troopers said. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that Jerry Perkins, 74, of Denison, Texas, was struck by another vehicle after he failed to yield while turning onto Highway 91/Boat Club Road.

Perkins was taken to Texoma Medical Center for treatment. No update on his condition has been released.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were not injured, the agency said. The crash remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Why Turning Collisions Can Cause Serious Harm

A turning crash often involves two vehicles moving at different speeds and angles, which changes how the force of impact is absorbed. When a vehicle turns across oncoming traffic, the other driver often has little time to brake or steer away before the vehicles meet. That gap, sometimes just a second or two, is where distraction becomes dangerous: a glance at a phone or dashboard screen can erase the only window a driver has to react.

The side and front corners of a vehicle, where many turning crashes make contact, are not reinforced the same way as the front bumper system built for head-on impacts. That means less structure is available to absorb the energy of the crash before it reaches the people inside. Seatbelts and airbags are designed for specific angles of impact, so a collision from the side or at an angle may not engage them as effectively as a straight-on hit.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023. Many of these involve turning or right-of-way errors at intersections, where closing speed and reaction time determine how much protection the vehicle's structure and safety systems can actually provide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does speed change how serious a crash turns out to be?

Yes. Higher speed means more energy has to be absorbed in the crash, which increases the chance of serious injury and vehicle damage, even in a short-distance collision like a turning accident.

Why is distracted driving so risky in these situations?

Turning crashes often happen in a narrow window of time. A distracted driver may not see the hazard until it's too close to avoid, removing the seconds needed to brake or steer clear.

Do weather and road conditions play a role?

Wet pavement, glare, or poor visibility can make it harder for a driver to judge gaps in traffic or stop in time, increasing the odds of a failure-to-yield crash.

What should I do right after a car accident?

Check for injuries, move to a safe location if possible, call 911, and exchange information with the other driver. Seek medical evaluation even if injuries aren't immediately obvious.
