Who Faces the Greatest Risk When Passenger Vehicles Meet Large Trucks
The driver and passengers in a smaller vehicle generally bear the worst of a crash involving a semi-truck. A loaded tractor-trailer can weigh 20 to 30 times more than a passenger car, so in a collision the occupants of the lighter vehicle absorb most of the force, even when the truck itself sustains only minor damage.
People living or driving in neighborhoods near closed highways also face added exposure when trucks and other large vehicles reroute onto local streets not built for that kind of traffic. Narrow residential roads, tighter turns, and utility infrastructure close to the roadway raise the chance of property damage and secondary crashes during these detours.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,472 people were killed in traffic crashes involving large trucks in 2023. Most of those killed in such crashes are occupants of the other vehicle rather than the truck driver, reflecting the size and weight gap between the two.
Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes large-truck crashes?
Common factors include driver fatigue, following too closely, blind spots, mechanical issues such as brake failure, and difficulty maneuvering in tight spaces or sudden traffic changes.
How can drivers share the road safely with trucks?
Stay out of a truck's blind spots, leave extra following distance, and avoid cutting in front of a semi, since trucks need significantly more distance to stop than passenger vehicles.
Does fatigue play a role in truck crashes?
Yes. Long hours behind the wheel are a recognized factor in commercial truck crashes, which is why federal rules limit how long drivers can operate before resting.
What should I do after a crash involving a commercial truck?
Call 911, move to safety if possible, seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, and report the crash to local police so an official record is created.
What to Do After a Truck Crash in Cary, IL
If you're involved in a crash with a large truck, call 911 right away and wait for police and fire crews to arrive. Even if you feel fine, get checked by a medical professional, since some injuries from these crashes aren't obvious right after impact.
Take photos of the scene if it's safe to do so, and get contact information for any witnesses. Keep a copy of the police report and any medical records in case you need them later. If a utility pole or other infrastructure is involved, stay well clear until crews confirm the area is safe, since downed wires can remain live even when a pole looks stable.
