Cass County, NE (March 21, 2026) – A 21-year-old man from Nebraska City was critically injured following a head-on crash involving a semi on Wednesday afternoon in Cass County. The collision occurred around 12:02 p.m. on 24th Avenue just north of Splitt Drive.
Authorities said the pickup was traveling northbound behind a semi when a southbound side dump semi attempted to pass another truck. During that maneuver, the southbound semi collided head-on with the pickup. Emergency units responded and found the pickup driver trapped inside the vehicle. Crews worked to remove him before he was airlifted to a medical center in critical condition. A passenger in the pickup was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the southbound semi, a 65-year-old man from Omaha, was treated at the scene and declined transport. Officials also reported that the pickup’s occupants were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Head-on Collisions With Large Trucks Often Lead to Serious Injuries
Head-on crashes involving large trucks can result in severe outcomes due to the force of impact. When vehicles collide in opposite directions, the combined speed increases the intensity of the crash.
Passing maneuvers on two-lane roads can add risk, especially when visibility or timing is limited. A misjudgment during a pass may place vehicles directly in the path of oncoming traffic.
Occupant protection can also affect injury severity. Being restrained in the vehicle may reduce movement during a crash and lower the risk of serious injury.
