CASTROVILLE, Monterey County, Calif., Oct. 21, 2026 — Two people were hurt in a crash early Tuesday morning, October 20, at the intersection of Del Monte Avenue and Blackie Road in Castroville, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported before 6 a.m. and involved two vehicles, one of them a sedan that came to rest on its side with heavy front-end damage in the roadway, the CHP log shows. A box truck was also involved, and the highway patrol said both eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway near the intersection were shut down later in the morning so crews could right the truck.
One driver was reported out of the vehicle and walking around at the scene shortly after the crash, and both parties were believed to have sustained injuries, according to the agency's log. Emergency crews and a tow truck were sent to the scene, though dispatchers noted heavy traffic delayed the tow truck's arrival and the extent of injuries has not been detailed publicly.
The California Highway Patrol has not released the cause of the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes crashes like this one?
Most two-vehicle collisions trace back to driver error such as failing to yield, following too closely, or misjudging another vehicle's speed at an intersection. Investigators typically review vehicle positions, road conditions and witness accounts before determining a cause.
Why does speed matter so much in a crash?
Higher speeds mean more distance needed to stop and more force at the moment of impact. Even a modest increase in speed can turn a minor collision into one with serious injuries.
How dangerous is distracted driving at intersections?
A few seconds of looking away from the road, whether at a phone or something inside the vehicle, is enough time to miss a stopped car, a turning vehicle or a changing signal. Intersections demand constant attention because of how many directions traffic can come from.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Castroville, CA
If you're involved in a crash in Castroville, try to move to a safe location if possible and check yourself and others for injuries before doing anything else. Call 911 so officers can document the scene and arrange medical help if needed, even for injuries that seem minor at first. Remember to take photos of the vehicles, the road, and any visible damage while you wait, and get contact information from any witnesses nearby. Afterward, see a doctor promptly, since some injuries like whiplash or internal bruising don't show symptoms right away, and keep copies of any medical records or police reports for your files.
