Central Point, OR (January 26, 2026) – A pedestrian tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle near the Interstate 5 Exit 33 northbound onramp and Pine Street on January 21. The collision occurred in the evening hours and prompted a significant emergency response.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, a 65-year-old man from Central Point was operating a 2022 GMC Sierra when he hit a pedestrian who was walking within the crosswalk at the time of the crash. Emergency responders from the Central Point Police Department, Jackson County Fire District 3, and Mercy Flights quickly arrived to assist.
The pedestrian, identified only as a 48-year-old from the Las Vegas area, suffered critical injuries. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital by Mercy Flights, he was pronounced deceased nearly one hour after the crash. The identities of both the victim and the driver have not been released.
Deputies secured the scene while the Jackson County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team conducted a full investigation. The crash shut down the roadway for approximately three hours while authorities examined the area and gathered evidence. Jackson County Roads assisted with traffic control during the closure.
The driver remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators. As of now, no charges have been filed, and the case remains under active review as officials work to determine all contributing factors.
