CENTRIA, Polk County, Wis., Oct. 7, 2026 — A 65-year-old man died Saturday night, October 3, after a hit-and-run crash near the junction of Highway 8 and Highway 35 west of Balsam Lake, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol. A 66-year-old man has since been arrested in connection with the crash.
The State Patrol said the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. as the man was reportedly trying to cross Highway 8. Troopers said a westbound driver struck him and left the scene without stopping. Responding crews found him dead at the scene. He has been identified by authorities as Roger Peterson of Luck, Wisconsin.
Investigators traced a vehicle of interest to a home in Burnett County, where a 66-year-old man from Webster, identified as James Harvey, was taken into custody, the State Patrol said. Details on any charges he may face have not been released.
The crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who died.
Why Hit-and-Run Crashes Happen on Rural Highways
Rural highway junctions like those found throughout Wisconsin combine high speeds with long, dark stretches where a pedestrian or stalled vehicle can be hard to see until the last second. Drivers often don't expect a person to be crossing a two-lane highway after dark, and reaction time narrows fast at highway speeds.
Panic plays a bigger role in hit-and-run cases than people assume. Some drivers flee not because they didn't realize they hit someone, but because fear, a suspended license, impairment, or an outstanding warrant pushes them to keep driving. That decision turns a crash into a criminal case and can delay medical help for anyone who survives the initial impact.
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than 200,000 vehicle occupants were injured in hit-and-run crashes in 2023. Rural intersections without lighting or marked crosswalks, like many found along Wisconsin's state highway system, concentrate the conditions that make these crashes more likely and make the fleeing driver harder to identify afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does speed affect whether someone survives a crash?
Even small increases in speed sharply raise the force involved in a crash. A pedestrian or vehicle occupant struck at highway speed has far less chance of survival than one struck at lower speeds, because the energy transferred in the impact rises fast as speed increases.
Why does seat belt use matter so much in crashes like this?
Seat belts keep occupants in their seats and reduce the chance of being thrown from a vehicle or into the windshield or dashboard during a sudden stop or impact. They don't prevent every injury, but they consistently lower the odds of death in a crash.
What should a family do after a fatal crash like this?
Families can request the official crash report from the investigating agency, ask about the status of any criminal case, and contact the county medical examiner or coroner's office with questions about an autopsy or death certificate.
How do investigators piece together what happened in a hit-and-run?
Investigators typically examine the scene for vehicle debris, paint transfer, and tire marks, review any nearby surveillance or dash-cam footage, and canvass the area for witnesses, often cross-referencing damage on a suspect vehicle once one is identified.
What to Do After a Hit-and-Run Crash in Centuria, Wisconsin
If you witness a hit-and-run crash, call 911 immediately and try to note details about the fleeing vehicle, such as its color, type, and any part of the license plate you can see. Stay with anyone who is injured if it's safe to do so, and wait for emergency crews.
Anyone involved in or affected by a crash should seek a medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor at first, since some injuries aren't obvious right away. Keep a copy of the police report and any medical records, and follow up with the investigating agency for updates on the case.
Communities around Centuria can also report any information about hit-and-run crashes to the Wisconsin State Patrol or local sheriff's office, even details that seem minor, since small leads often help investigators identify a vehicle or driver.
