Frequently Asked Questions
What gear helps reduce injury risk for motorcyclists?
A DOT-approved helmet, a riding jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots can reduce the severity of injuries in a crash. Reflective or brightly colored gear can also help other drivers see a rider sooner.
What usually causes crashes between motorcycles and cars?
Common causes include a driver failing to see the motorcycle, misjudging its speed or distance, unsafe lane changes, and turns made across a motorcycle's path.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than car crashes?
Riders have no frame, airbags, or seatbelts around them, so a crash can throw them from the bike or into the path of another vehicle, usually at speed.
How do left-turning vehicles cause collisions with motorcycles?
A driver turning left at an intersection may misjudge a motorcycle's speed or not see it at all, turning into its path. These crashes commonly happen as a motorcycle passes through or near an intersection.
