What Actually Reduces Pedestrian Deaths on Roads Like Route 28
Stretches of highway, such as Route 28, are built to move traffic quickly between interchanges, not for people on foot. When a road has wide travel lanes, high posted speeds, and few sidewalks or marked crossings, pedestrians end up walking along shoulders or crossing at unmarked points because there is no safer option nearby. That mismatch between how the road is designed and how it actually gets used is where many of these crashes start.
Engineering changes have a track record of cutting pedestrian deaths on arterial roads. Raised medians give people a place to stop halfway across a wide roadway, rather than committing to the entire crossing at once. Better street lighting helps drivers see pedestrians in time to react. Signal retiming, including longer walk phases and leading pedestrian intervals at intersections, gives people a head start before turning vehicles get a green light. Roundabouts, when used in place of high-speed intersections, tend to lower both the number and severity of crashes because vehicles move through at slower, more consistent speeds.
Speed is the other half of the equation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 24 percent of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes were struck by hit-and-run drivers in 2023. Lower posted speeds and road designs that naturally slow traffic, rather than relying only on signage, tend to give both drivers and pedestrians more time to react before a crossing turns into a collision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does speed affect a pedestrian's chance of surviving a crash?
Yes. Survival rates drop sharply as vehicle speed increases. A pedestrian struck at a lower speed has a much better chance of survival than one struck at highway speeds, where injuries are often fatal.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur on arterial roads and highways away from marked crosswalks, particularly where sidewalks are limited and posted speeds are high.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility plays a major role, and a large share of pedestrian deaths nationally occur after dark, especially on roads without adequate lighting.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being hit by a vehicle?
If possible, stay still and call 911 or have someone else call. Avoid moving unless there is immediate danger, and wait for emergency responders to assess any injuries, even ones that seem minor at first.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Chantilly, VA
Anyone who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 right away and avoid moving an injured person unless they are in immediate danger. Getting checked by medical personnel at the scene matters, even if injuries seem minor, because some symptoms can take hours to appear.
If you or someone you know is connected to a pedestrian crash, it helps to write down what you remember as soon as possible, including where you were and what you saw, while the details are still fresh. Cooperating with the responding agency's investigation and following up on any medical care recommended afterward are both important steps in the days that follow.
