CHATTANOOGA, Hamilton County, Tenn., Oct. 7, 2026 — One person was taken to a hospital on Monday afternoon, October 5, after a five-vehicle crash shut down lanes on Interstate 75 southbound in Chattanooga.

The crash happened near Standifer Gap Road around 5:15 p.m., according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Two southbound lanes and the left shoulder were closed afterward, and traffic backed up to Volkswagen Drive within about a half hour, TDOT reported.

The Chattanooga Police Department said one person was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. No other injuries have been reported.

The cause of the crash has not been determined. It remains under investigation.

Multi-Vehicle Crashes on Interstates: What the Numbers Show

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023. A share of those involve three or more vehicles, and interstates are a common setting because of high speeds and closely spaced lane changes. When one vehicle suddenly slows or stops in heavy traffic, following drivers often have little time to react, and a single collision can pull several more cars into it.

Chain-reaction crashes tend to close multiple lanes at once, which is why backups can stretch for miles even when injuries are limited. Response crews often have to work around active traffic while sorting out which vehicles were involved and the order in which impacts occurred, a process that can take hours longer than it does for a two-car crash.

Because so many vehicles and drivers are involved, these crashes are also harder to reconstruct. Investigators typically rely on vehicle positions, damage patterns, and witness accounts to determine the sequence of events, which is one reason causes are often listed as undetermined in early reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is distracted driving a factor in multi-vehicle crashes?

Even a few seconds of looking away from the road can prevent a driver from reacting to sudden braking ahead, which is how one slowdown can turn into a pileup involving several vehicles.

How do traffic conditions contribute to crashes like this one?

Heavy congestion, lane closures, and sudden stops increase the chance that following vehicles won't have enough space or time to stop safely, raising the risk of chain-reaction collisions.

What should I do immediately after a car accident?

Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, call 911, and exchange information with other drivers. Photographing the scene and vehicle positions can help later when the cause is being sorted out.
