Frequently Asked Questions
Why does keeping a safe following distance matter so much?
Extra space between vehicles gives drivers more time to react if a car ahead slows, stops, or drifts out of its lane, which can be the difference between a near-miss and a collision.
Do crashes usually trigger a second, separate wreck nearby?
Yes. Stopped traffic, debris, and drivers slowing to look can catch following vehicles off guard, so secondary crashes near an initial wreck are a recognized risk at these scenes.
What makes a two-vehicle or multi-vehicle crash harder to investigate?
Investigators have to reconstruct the path and speed of each vehicle, sort through conflicting witness accounts, and determine which vehicle crossed into the other's lane or right-of-way before fault can be established.
What typically causes a vehicle to cross the center line like this?
Distraction, drowsiness, medical emergencies, impairment, and mechanical failure are common factors, though the specific cause in any one crash is determined only after investigators review the evidence.
