Chicago, IL (February 20, 2026) – One man was killed and another was critically injured early Friday morning in a hit-and-run crash on Chicago’s Northwest Side. The collision happened just before 6 a.m. on Friday, February 20, in the 3500 block of N Elston Ave in the Avondale neighborhood.
Emergency units responded to reports of a serious two-vehicle crash at the intersection of N Elston Ave and Kedzie Ave. Police said a Toyota RAV4 was traveling northbound on Elston when it disregarded a traffic signal and struck a Toyota Prius that was heading southbound on Kedzie.
A 25-year-old man who was a passenger in the Prius was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 37-year-old driver of the Prius was also taken to the same hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the RAV4 fled the scene on foot following the crash. Authorities have not released further details at this time.
