What Can Happen When a Vehicle Leaves the Road?

A vehicle leaving the roadway can encounter hazards that are not present in normal traffic lanes. Fixed equipment, parked vehicles, construction machinery, and other objects can create serious risks when struck.

The severity of a crash can depend on the vehicle’s speed, the direction it travels after leaving the roadway, and the type of object it hits. Occupants may also face different levels of injury based on where they are seated and whether they are properly restrained.

Child passengers require age- and size-appropriate restraints while traveling in vehicles. Proper seat belts and child safety seats can help reduce the risk of serious injury during a sudden impact.
