Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian crashes more likely to happen at night or in low light?
Yes. Reduced visibility makes it harder for drivers to see people on or near the roadway, and a large share of pedestrian deaths happen in darkness or in the early morning hours before sunrise.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a vehicle?
If possible, stay still and call 911 right away. Even if injuries seem minor, it's important to get checked by a medical provider, since some injuries such as internal bleeding or concussions aren't obvious right away. Try to get the names of any witnesses and note where the crash happened.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In most states, including Texas, pedestrians in a marked or unmarked crosswalk generally have the right of way over turning or crossing vehicles. Drivers are required to yield, though pedestrians should still watch for oncoming traffic before stepping out.
What can drivers do to avoid hitting someone on foot?
Slowing down in areas with limited lighting or no sidewalks, scanning the road edges, and avoiding distractions behind the wheel all make it easier to spot a person walking before it's too late to react.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in China Spring, TX
Anyone who witnesses a pedestrian struck by a vehicle should call 911 immediately and avoid moving the injured person unless there's an immediate danger, like oncoming traffic. Stay on the line with dispatchers, who can walk you through basic first aid until emergency crews arrive.
If you or a loved one are involved in a pedestrian crash, seek medical evaluation even if you feel okay at first. Keep records of any treatment, and if you're able, take photos of the scene before conditions change. Reporting the crash promptly to local authorities helps ensure an accurate record is on file as the investigation moves forward.
