Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm rear-ended on the freeway?
Move to the shoulder if the vehicle is drivable, turn on hazard lights, and check for injuries before exiting the vehicle. Call 911 and, when safe, exchange information and document the scene with photos.
How do road and traffic conditions affect stopping distance?
Heavier traffic, wet pavement, and reduced visibility all extend the distance needed to stop safely, which is why following distances should increase in those conditions.
Are rear-end crashes more likely in heavy traffic?
Yes. Stop-and-go conditions, common on busy freeway segments like I-805, give drivers less time to react when traffic ahead slows suddenly.
What to Do After a Rear-End Crash in Chula Vista, CA
If you're involved in a rear-end crash, start by checking yourself and any passengers for injuries, then move to a safe area if possible. Even if you feel fine, some injuries like whiplash or soft-tissue strain don't show symptoms right away, so a medical check-up in the days after is worth it. Get contact and insurance information from everyone involved, and request a copy of the CHP or local police report once it's available. Keep notes on how the crash happened while the details are fresh, and follow up with your insurer promptly.
