CHULA VISTA, San Diego County, Calif., Sept. 18, 2026 — A three-vehicle crash on southbound I-805 at Palm Avenue left at least one person injured Thursday evening, September 17, according to authorities.

The California Highway Patrol received reports of the collision shortly before 7:40 p.m. Thursday. A white Toyota Corolla, a silver Subaru Crosstrek and another silver Subaru were involved, authorities said, and at least one vehicle had airbags deploy.

The crash blocked two lanes and slowed traffic on southbound I-805 as crews worked the scene, authorities said. What began as a report of a crash with a vehicle possibly still in the roadway was later updated by the CHP to a crash involving minor injuries. A tow truck was requested to remove at least one vehicle from the scene.

The circumstances that led to the collision remain under investigation. We wish the injured a full recovery.

Multi-Vehicle Crashes and the Toll on Truck and Passenger Occupants

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 28,595 large-truck occupants were injured in multi-vehicle crashes involving large trucks in 2023. That figure covers only injuries to people riding in the trucks themselves, not the often larger number of people hurt in the other vehicles caught up in those same crashes.

The number points to a basic feature of multi-vehicle wrecks: injuries pile up across every vehicle involved, not just one. A crash that starts with two cars can quickly draw in a third or fourth vehicle if traffic behind is following too closely or reacting late. Each added vehicle multiplies the number of people exposed and complicates what officers find when they arrive.

Freeways carry a particular risk because of speed differences between lanes and the short reaction windows drivers have when a vehicle ahead slows suddenly. A relatively minor initial impact can trigger a chain of following collisions before traffic control units get lanes closed off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does fog or low visibility play into pile-ups on the freeway?

Reduced visibility gives drivers less time to see slowing or stopped traffic ahead. Even a short delay in reacting can turn a single slowdown into a chain-reaction crash involving several vehicles.

Why does following distance matter so much in these crashes?

A safe following distance gives a driver room to stop or steer around trouble. When vehicles bunch up too closely at highway speed, one hard brake can set off a series of rear-end impacts down the line.

Do secondary crashes commonly happen after the first one?

Yes. Slowed or stopped traffic near an original crash scene creates a hazard of its own, and drivers approaching from behind sometimes strike stopped vehicles or emergency responders before lanes can be reopened.

Why are multi-vehicle crashes harder to investigate than single-car wrecks?

Investigators have to sort out the order of impacts, how fast each vehicle was traveling, and which driver actions contributed to each collision. With more vehicles and more drivers, there are more accounts to reconcile.

What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Chula Vista, CA

If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, move to a safe location if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so, and turn on hazard lights to warn other drivers. Check yourself and passengers for injuries before checking on others nearby.

Call 911 to report the crash and request medical help if anyone is hurt, even if injuries seem minor at first. Some injuries, particularly from airbag deployment or whiplash, don't show symptoms right away. A medical evaluation soon after the crash creates a record tying any injury to the incident.

Exchange information with other drivers involved and, when officers respond, get a copy of the report or the report number for your records. Photos of vehicle positions, damage and the roadway can help clarify what happened once the adrenaline wears off. Chula Vista residents involved in freeway crashes should also expect that a CHP investigation may take time to determine how each vehicle became involved.
