CLARKSBURG, Sacramento County, Calif., Oct. 5, 2026 — One person died, and another was hospitalized after a wrong-way crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 early on Sunday morning, October 4, near Clarksburg.

The California Highway Patrol said it responded around 3:10 a.m. to a report of a vehicle traveling the wrong way on southbound I-5 north of Hood Franklin Road. The wrong-way car collided head-on with another vehicle traveling in the correct direction.

The driver going the wrong way died at the scene. The occupant of the other vehicle was taken to a hospital; the extent of that person's injuries has not been released.

CHP has not released the names of those involved. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and officials have not said what led the driver to enter the highway going the wrong direction.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who died.

How Investigators Piece Together a Wrong-Way Crash

A wrong-way crash investigation usually starts with the basics: measuring skid marks, mapping where vehicles and debris came to rest, and photographing the scene before anything is moved. Investigators usually look for the point where the wrong-way vehicle entered the highway, checking for a damaged gate, missing wrong-way signage, or gaps in a median that may have allowed the error.

Identifying someone who died in a crash is not instant. Agencies wait until next of kin has been formally notified before releasing a name, which can take hours or longer depending on whether family lives nearby or out of state. That is also why early reports describe people by age or role rather than by name.

Toxicology results, which can show whether alcohol or drugs played a role, typically take weeks to come back from a lab. A full crash reconstruction report, which combines vehicle data, road evidence, and witness statements, usually is not finished for a month or more. That pace is standard for serious crashes and does not reflect how carefully a case is being handled.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, alcohol-impaired drivers had a higher risk of fatal wrong-way crashes on divided highways in 2014 through 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time of day do wrong-way crashes happen most commonly?

They cluster late at night and in the early morning hours, usually between midnight and sunrise, when traffic is lighter and a wrong-way entry is less likely to be caught quickly.

What should I do if I spot a car driving the wrong way?

Slow down, move to the right lane if possible, and avoid swerving sharply. Call 911 with your location and direction of travel so dispatchers can alert other drivers and responders.

How do highways try to stop wrong-way entries before they happen?

Many interstates use lowered wrong-way signs, reflective pavement arrows, and in some locations sensors that alert highway patrol dispatch the moment a car enters an off-ramp going the wrong direction.
